Configuring Trunking
Trunking allows VLANs to be extended across multiple switches.
Trunk ports encapsulate the bridged frames within a proprietary
frame. The proprietary frame includes information required to
reproduce the frame on the opposite end of the trunk and to
maintain VLAN separation.
Without trunking service, different groups of VLANs must use two
separate virtual circuits (VCs) across an ATM interface. With trunking,
different groups of VLANs can share the same ATM VC, as shown in
Figure 1-3.

Note
For ATM interfaces, a trunking service and a PTOP service can run
simultaneously on the same VLAN.
